Mattresses
The way a mattress is made, sewn together and filled will affect its feel. Both fillings and springs can make a bed harder or softer. As a general rule, the better the bed, the better quality the fillings.
How do you know what is the correct level of support for you?
Quite simply, your bed should help to hold your spine in correct alignment. That also means retaining a correct lordosis (the hollow in your lower back) when you lie face upwards.
If a bed is too soft, you could sink in too far. Where as a bed that's too firm, may leave your spine unsupported and prove extremely uncomfortable on shoulders, elbows and bottom. As a leading bed specialist, we like to make choosing your new bed as simple as possible.

Bases
Here we explain the base, mattress and fixing options available.
Open coiled springing
Ideally suited to those who prefer a firmer sleeping surface, this is the most commonly used system, It uses coil springs kept in place by a strong border rod fixed around the outside of the top and bottom. Our suppliers use strong, high quality steel coil springs of various gauges for support.
Pocket springing
The ultimate in springing luxury. Every single spring in the mattress is individually pocketed in fabric. The fabric compresses the coil to enhance its 'springiness'. This helps to make sure that when pressure is put onto the mattress, the sides remain parallel. This sophisticated system helps prevent couples rolling together in the night - unless of course they want to!
Hand tufting
The most traditional way of securing the fillings in a mattress. Craftsmen pass a 'Tuft' through the mattress then secure it with a felt washer.
Micro-quilting
Available in a range of high and low 'Lofts' or thicknesses, fillings are sewn to the fabric, creating an attractive, supportive pattern.
Panel-quilting
Top fillings and fabrics are stitched together in a diamond quilt pattern to achieve a smooth sleeping surface.
Platform top base
The platform top provides a solid base on which the mattress lies and is ideal for those who want a firmer feel to their bed.
Sprung edge base
This base incorporates springs across its surface, providing softer edge to edge support for the mattress.
