A variety of cuts have evolved over the years such as lace, diamond, fan, flute, jewel and hobnail and they are sill used today. An apprentice cutter will take around five years before being considered a skilled craftsman. Each cutter learns each individual pattern and is able to cut most designs within the range from memory. A cutter needs a steady hand, a good eye and lots of concentration.
The glass takes on a frosted appearance where the pattern has been cut. Polishing brings back the lustre and clarity of the crystal. Fine engraving is sometimes used to decorate special or limited edition pieces. Different sizes of copper wheel engrave the item producing designs such as floral patterns, animals, lettering and the thistle design.
